Q. What does motherhood mean to you?

A. As a queer woman, it means everything. Growing up, I never saw families like ours. While nothing matters more to me than the internal architecture and well-being of our family, I’m acutely aware of how much diverse representation matters. I know how special our family is, because it’s everything I ever dreamt of - despite not knowing how it would ever work out for me. I know that by our family just existing, it gives others hope and permission, to create a family they dream of some day.

Q. What is the most rewarding part of being a mother?

A. Seeing my daughter grow, develop and flourish. Watching her take in the world, make creative choices and become an independent little thinker and doer. I absolutely loved the early, sleepy newborn days, they were so easeful for us (thankfully) in so many ways. In contrast, being a parent to a toddler is a lot more busy and colourful, and unquestionably keeps you on your toes. But seeing Mila become her own little person, asserting her rights, preferences and needs with such fervent cheek has fast become the greatest joy I’ve ever known. I aspire to be more like her - authentic, unbridled, joyful, decisive - each day.

Q. What’s your favorite part about being a mother?

A. Aside from breathing in every moment I get to spend with Mila at this precious age, having the sheer privilege to do it alongside my partner, and Mila’s other mother, Lucy.
